“Why is it so difficult to find companies that do excellent tours of Europe with good food and not “coach party” meals? Companies such as Cox & Kings and Kuoni manage it on long-haul holidays, so why isn’t it possible on short hauls? An otherwise excellent tour in Italy was spoilt by having reconstituted potato and tinned carrots for dinner. Food is as important as anything else on holiday”. Shirley Wolfenden, via email

Times Travel expert Julia Brookes responds: If you want to be sure of decent meals, go for tours with smaller group limits. With more than 20 people, it can be difficult to cater for everyone and visits to local restaurants may not be possible.

It might be an idea to find a trip that makes good food a priority. Try Arblaster & Clarke (01730 263111), which runs delicious-sounding gourmet trips in Europe. This autumn you could go truffle hunting in Piedmont or visit Parma ham producers in Emilia Romagna. Its wine tours cover everywhere from France to Slovenia, and can also be relied on for fine cuisine.”
