Burgundy Hospices de Beaune & Musique et Vin au Clos Vougeot

26 - 30 June 2012

In conjunction with Anthony Hanson M.W. of Christie’s Wine International

Our special Burgundy tour this June ‘Hospices de Beaune & Musique et Vin au Clos Vougeot’ brings together the brilliant events of wine and music celebrating Burgundy, its wines and the charities connected to it.

We have a private invitation to an intimate gala concert inside Chateau de Clos Vougeot featuring the brilliant mezzo-soprano, Joyce DiDonato. Joyce will be singing extracts from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Il Barbiere di Siviglia in the prestigious and small venue of the Clos Vougeot. The concert with Joyce DiDonato is followed by a gala dinner and charity auction, which is hosted by Anthony Hanson MW. Some great wines will be served over dinner and under the hammer will be various ‘lots’ of fine Burgundy, donated by some of the very top domaines.

Anthony Hanson MW of Christie’s, and renowned Burgundy expert, has arranged for us to spend a morning with Monsieur Roland Masse (regisseur and winemaker of the Domaine de Hospices de Beaune). We explore the Hospices vineyards with Roland, Anthony and a geologist then have an in depth tasting that will show that the Domaine must now be considered in the top flight of Burgundy domaines. This is an extraordinarily wonderful thing for any wine lover to do.

The tour will be led by Charles Metcalfe, wine broadcaster and one of the co-Chairmen of the International Wine Challenge, though also known for his singing abilities, having been an Opera singer early in his career.

Apart from the privilege of visiting the vineyards of the Hospices de Beaune, other visits and wine tastings will include Faiveley, Domaine de la Vougeraie and Charles’ selection of small stellar domaines that are not open to the general public. We also have dinner with Maison Joseph Drouhin and at Albert Bichot in Beaune, and lunch with Domaine Senard in Aloxe-Corton.

These special invitations come in part because our syndicate has bought a barrel Beaune 1er Cru at the 2011 Hospices de Beaune auction. The funds raised go to the hospital, the historic Hôtel-Dieu and its museum of treasures. The auction consists of wine from the Hospices own vineyards sold in barrels containing the equivalent of 24 cases of wine. The auction is run by Christie’s of London and its team of wine specialists, including Burgundy expert, Anthony Hanson MW. This tour offers the chance to join our syndicate that owns a barrel of 2011 ‘Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Guigone de Salins’.

The 2011 concert and auction raised money for a fund with a goal to buy very high quality string instruments that can be lent to young musicians aged 9 to 12 (especially from under-privileged backgrounds), for international competitions, first recordings or concerts.

We do hope that you will be able to join us on this rare and special wine tasting holiday to share with us these wonderful wines, some great music and our sheer passion for everything that is great about Burgundy!
