Early Autumn Champagne
6 - 8 September 2008
Our first visits are to two long established, high quality growers H. Billiot on the south side of the Montagne de Reims who makes a rich, full style and to B. Hatté based in Verzenay. This is on the north-east side of the Montagne (and reputed to be the coldest village in Champagne) makes traditionally styled wines, with a lighter yet assertive feel.
On Monday morning, we visit the cellars of Veuve Clicquot- Ponsardin in Reims. This is a full and detailed tour which usually covers much of the history of this important House. Our last visit is to André Jacquart et fils in Vertus, (not to be confused with the large Reims co-operative, also called Jacquart). André Jacquart craft fine blanc de blancs champagnes from around Mesnil sur Oger. They will, by this stage, have all or almost all of their production from wines fermented in oak. We taste some superb champagne over our last lunch here.
