Verona Opera & Wine

On this superb Opera and Wine tour we are based in the centre of the lovely city of Verona with it’s magnificent Roman Arena, 14th century Castelvecchio, renaissance buildings and the famous balcony claimed to feature in Romeo & Juliet. By day journey through the wine villages of Valpolicella and on the shores of Lake Garda, and by night experience the glamour and intensity of world-class Opera performed in a magical setting.

The atmosphere in the arena, the Roman Ampitheatre, makes for a truly unforgettable experience. In July 2010 the opera performances are Madam Butterfly, Aida, Turandot and Carmen, which are superb in this theatrical and dramatic setting. Happily, after a wonderful evening, your hotel is within walking distance of the Arena, so there is no searching to find your coach after midnight for a lengthy journey home which you would find on a less exclusive holiday. We include one numbered step to the opera of your choice and can arrange further tickets to performances on the other three evenings.

Our wine visits are planned to depart mid to late morning, so, after your late night at the opera, there is no rushing for early starts. On arrival we visit the dynamic Zenato, where we taste great Valpolicellas as well as their complex Lugana Riserva from the shores of Lake Garda. We then head to the pretty hills of Vapolicella for our second visit with the welcoming family run Ca La Bionda. We lunch at the Valpolicella estate of Count Serego Alighieri, descendant of the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri; these are stunning wines - the power of the Amarones will bowl you over and to finish there is the exquisite Recioto! We head west to the region of Soave to taste some superb examples of these sadly all too often maligned wines.

There is also time to enjoy Verona’s Roman and Medieval sites, elegant shops, wine bars and restaurants.

Admittedly, we had booked the tour more for the opera than for the wine tasting. We appreciate good wines, but we are certainly not wine connoisseurs. But as the tour turned out (and Gordon Ritchie is largely to credit for this), we enjoyed the wine tasting and the visits to the vineyards, just as much as the opera.

All in all, we are quite happy that we skipped the available American-based Italian tours, and took your tour instead.
